Roles:
The Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt) is one of three higher federal authorities of the Federal Ministry of Finance. Its head office is in Bonn-Beuel and it has three other offices in Berlin, Schwedt and Saarlouis ( see departments).
Management of the Federal Central Tax Office and its strategic and operational objectives are the responsibility of Gabriele Hahn (Chairman).
The management is supported in its official strategic objectives by the executive management directly subordinate to it. The department for cross-functional roles, headed by the Vice-Chairman of the BZSt, is responsible for operational implementation of the strategic measures.
The Tax I (international sub-department), Tax II (domestic sub-department), Federal Tax Inspection I (production sector sub-department) and Federal Tax Inspection II (service sector sub-department) departments are responsible for implementation of the rest of the operational business.
A total of 38 units, each with specific areas of responsibility, are assigned to the respective specialist departments ( see organisational chart).
Individual units or sub-units of individual departments located in Bonn-Beuel are spread over the three sites named above due to their local responsibility and in order to achieve more efficient workflow management.
The account screening procedure unit and supervisory unit for the grant of the retirement provision allowance ("Riester-Rente" - a government-aided, privately-funded pension scheme) and for the collection of the standard flat-rate tax (mini jobs) are among those located in the Berlin office.
The Central VAT Unit (ZU), which is the office responsible for VAT inspection procedures within the Single European Market, is located in the Saarlouis office.
Department Tax II in the Schwedt office refunds VAT to entrepreneurs domiciled abroad.
The Federal Central Tax Office currently employs around 1.000 staff.
