Roles:
The core role of the Federal Minister for Finance is to plan the financial policy and the basic direction of the economic policy of the federal government. He thus has a crucial control role within central government. The Federal Minister for Finance coordinates the budgetary proposals of the individual ministries and drafts the annual federal budget within the framework of the political guidelines stipulated by the Federal Chancellor. The Minister has a right of objection to all fiscal decisions by the government. Thus the Federal Ministry of Finance streamlines the financial affairs of the government in order to produce a sustained financial policy.
The federal government secures the financial efficiency of the state by its tax policy. It must be guaranteed that this does not adversely affect the citizens' and businesses' incentive and willingness to produce. In addition, fiscal policy must support the environmental principles of our body politic.
European and international economic and currency policy is increasingly gaining significance in the wake of European integration (European economic and currency union) and the worldwide globalisation process.
Furthermore, the Federal Ministry of Finance is also responsible for German postage stamps, the regulation of war-induced burdens, federal assets and customs.
